French Gastronomy in Nepal

French Ambassador Yves Carmona announced in a press conference today the participation of two Nepali restaurants in the Gout de France/Good France event celebrating French gastronomy.

“Diplomacy, at all times, has been more effective around a good meal accompanied with fine wines; that creates a more conducive atmosphere for tough discussion,” said Carmona.

UNESCO added French gastronomy to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010.

The event, which will be held on 21 March, will have over 1,500 chefs participating in various locations worldwide. In Nepal, The Old House Restaurant and Hotel Yak and Yeti’s Chimney Fine Dining Restaurant will be presenting a selection of dishes for the occasion. The Residence de France will also be hosting a French dinner in the spirit of the event.

Hoping to cater to Nepali audiences, all products used in the dishes will be locally sourced by the restaurants instead of being imported from France. This is also part of the French Ambassador’s initiative to cut back on Nepal’s carbon footprint. However, there will be wines and champagne from France served on the day of the event.

“This initiative will allow hotels to enter into competition and show their skills,” shares Philippe Belhay of Hotel Yak & Yeti.

Both restaurants will be including the dishes prepared for the event in their long-term menu
