The French Embassy in Kathmandu has submitted a feasibility study report on Kathmandu City Urban Cable Car Project.

French Ambassador to Nepal Yves Carmona submitted the report to Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport Raghubir Mahaseth at an event in the Capital on Wednesday.

The study, carried out by a consortium of engineers and consultants from French companies SYSTRA and MDP, was financed by the French Government under a technical assistance programme.

Head of South Asia Economic Department at the French Embassy in New Delhi Jean-Marc Fenet, Counsellor for Sustainable Development Fanny Hervé and representatives of MDP, SYSTRA and POMA were present on the occasion.

“The objective of the study was to put into perspective the feasibility and relevance of a cable transport system in Kathmandu, as fast to implement, a cost-effective and sustainable solution to tackle traffic congestion, reduce air pollution and ease mobility of the city,” the embassy said in a statement.

The report also details on how the cable car system could be a relevant part of the public transportation system in the Valley. Highlighting a 7-km pilot line with four lanes and seven stations between Boudhanath and Bishunumati in Kalimati, the report has suggested various operational and financial models such as the public-private-partnership and design-build-operate for the project.

The urban cable car system results in 50-60 percent saving in terms of time and reduce up to 40 percent traffic related problems, it says.
